Here's and interesting article from a local station in RI:
"This time of year, movers are in high demand. However, customers looking for a bargain may find going cheaper may be riskier in the long run.
Rogue movers are a growing trend, according to Terrence Mercer with the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers , the state agency that regulates moving companies.
There are lots of people advertising moving services on various websites, like Craigslist , and offering cheap moving rates. Some even offer flat rates as low as $225. The problem, according to Mercer, is many of these companies are not licensed or insured, which is illegal.
"There's no guarantee that the vehicles they're using are safe. You can't even be sure that they're going to show up at the next house with your goods," Mercer said.
When one of these uninsured movers breaks or steals items, it's the customer's homeowners or renters insurance that has to pay up, or they have to pay for it out of pocket.
Kevin Kernan, who owns Jones Moving and Storage, said these rogue movers take business away from licensed movers almost daily.
"It does no good to save a few dollars, if anything, to find out that you're at risk of being sued," Kernan said.
That's because if one of these uninsured movers injures himself on your property, he has up to a year to file a claim against your homeowners insurance.
Before hiring a moving company, make sure:
- They have a residential mover's license
- Never pay in cash
- Make sure they have an actual local address
- Not just a P.O. Box or an email address
"Without an address, without an ad in the phonebook, you just wonder if they started it up last week," Kernan said."
